About 3 kilometers from Ha Giang city, Tha Village in Phuong Do commune (Ha Giang city) is a breathtakingly beautiful destination that captivates visitors from afar. Tha Village is a serene and peaceful mountain countryside village, characterized by its rustic stilt houses, lush green rice fields, bamboo groves, and the unique cultural features of the Tay ethnic group in Ha Giang. Visitors to Tha Village can interact with and learn about the lifestyle and culture of the local people at various homestays.
In contrast to the villages nestled on the majestic rocky slopes, where one sees only stones, Tha Village resembles a soft, lush green veil with its rice fields and palm gardens. Tha Village is tranquil, without the sounds of music or traffic. Upon entering the village, one only hears the gentle flow of crystal-clear water running through small ditches, inviting visitors to explore Tha Village. In the distance, mountain ranges stretch endlessly, and Tha Village is often enveloped in a veil of white mist, enhancing the scenery with clouds, skies, and lush green forests. Occasionally, a few leisurely visitors stroll along the rice field paths, stopping now and then to capture the enchanting views.

Tha Village is beautiful because it is a cultural village that still preserves the traditional cultural values of the Tay ethnic group. The highlight of the village is the almost intact stilt houses. Although it is just a short distance from Ha Giang city, Tha Village seems like a different world—a world without high-rise buildings and bustling traffic. When asked why they don’t build concrete houses for convenience, every villager, from the elderly to the young, gives the same answer: the stilt houses are part of their ethnic identity and cannot be abandoned.
Strolling around Tha Village and enjoying the fresh air, visitors can fully appreciate the unique charm of this place. The Tay families here are hospitable and always welcome visitors from afar into their homes. Just a cup of tea, and more importantly, the host’s bright smile or a gentle look, is enough to make visitors feel a deep attachment to the village. The Tay people in Tha Village also preserve the traditional craft of weaving brocade and make products such as bags, scarves, and clothes, providing visitors with opportunities to learn, observe, and even try their hand at this craft.

Tha Village boasts nearly a dozen spacious, beautiful, and comfortable stilt house homestays. The simple bedding is always kept clean. Staying with a Tay family, visitors can enjoy specialty dishes such as fish cooked with sour bamboo shoots, shredded mountain chicken salad, and black pork grilled in bamboo tubes wrapped with forest vegetables and served with corn wine. The Tay people are excellent cooks; their food is naturally raised or grown, and their rice is sticky and fragrant. Meals in Tha Village are gathered in the cozy stilt houses, simple yet strangely attractive to visitors.
Tourists are welcomed according to Tay customs. The Tay people slaughter pigs and chickens to prepare traditional dishes such as grilled meat, fried meat, and spring rolls. Grilled meat is a signature dish of the Tay people, often made during festivals, Tet holidays, or housewarming events. Preparing this dish is meticulous, requiring various spices like cardamom, dổi seeds, pepper, turmeric, and shrimp paste.
When night falls, visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the songs and music of Tay boys and girls. This special occasion allows guests to experience traditional folk songs preserved by the Tay people through generations. The most remarkable is the “Then” singing, a style of singing for praying for a good harvest or love, interwoven with dance and lively performances. The Tinh lute player improvises melodies that rise and fall, softly or animatedly, while performers and visitors sway to the rhythm of the music and songs.
The gentle and peaceful beauty of Tha Village, with its year-round mist and lush green forests, combined with the friendliness of its people and the unique culture of the Tay ethnic group, always leaves a lasting impression on visitors exploring the Ha Giang region.
